Olufisayo Bakre and Andrew Quade, an
interracial couple from Savannah, Georgia were targeted recently due
to their choice to be together. But the altercation did not stop at
sly comments which the couple had mentioned receiving quite often,
Quade, 23, was badly beaten and had to be hospitalized.
Reports said that Quade was walking
through Ellis Square Friday night a little before midnight headed to
a birthday party with his African-American girlfriend when suddenly
three black men began shouting racial comments and insulting the two.
The couple said the next thing they remembered was Quade unconscious
on the ground. “He was basically left for dead”, girlfriend,
Olufisayo Bakre reported, “I don't want to go into all the gory
details, but they could have stopped, but they kept going.
Later Quade reported that he did try
to ignore the comments, he did not address the situation immediately
because he wanted to get more information, but before that was even
possible he was knocked unconscious.
Bakre said, “I think of this as a
hate crime. It's that simple”. But in Georgia there is no hate
crime law to protect its citizens from acts such as these. Therefore,
if there is enough evidence the case would have to be referred
to the FBI being as there are only federal laws that could refer to
their case. But the video quality that the investigators received is
not very good and the couple did not get a very precise description
either.
This man was attacked for no other
reason than being white with a black girlfriend. He was brutally
beaten for simply practicing his human rights and living his life the
way he chose to do so. The fact that there is no law against being
targeted for associating with who you please seems completely unfair
to me. What the older generations fail to realize is that the past is
the past, and younger generations are beginning to leave it there,
the world would be a much more peaceful place if they would do the
same.
What a great article. This issue is almost shocking to me, I would think that in an area like Savannah or any larger city in any state would be more accepting of something this natural. It should not be a big deal who we choose to have as partners.Although, I suppose that since we are in the south, there is still some heat in the race department, However, the guy was not being disrespectful in the least and should have been left alone.
ReplyDeleteRemember to find articles that are international in scope. You can talk about how human rights are being violated in America, but also how they are being violated globally. Be objective in your analysis. Good summary.
