Robyn Myers Blog 1: Families

Families of theater victims plan public statement

At midnight of July twentieth, 12 people died and 58 were injured from a shooting in Colorado.  James Holmes was the suspect, who is charged with murder and attempted murder.  He dropped out of the University of Colorado, six weeks before the shooting.
This coming Tuesday, August twenty-eighth, relatives from the people killed in the Colorado movie theater plan to speak about some events that need to be addressed.  According to a news release there will be a news conference to discuss behind the scenes developments and they plan that this will benefit for all the victims.  It is unknown what events they plan to discuss.  They are expecting most of the 12 people who were killed, relatives to come to be represented.  Holmes sent a notebook to university psychiatrist Fenton, and she is scheduled to testify at a hearing this Thursday.  However, Holmes defense lawyers have said he is mentally ill and at this moment, they are fighting prosecution attempts to see his notebook and records.  Since the families’ announcement, it has added to the mystery since its early days.  Most court documents at this moment have been kept secret.  Many of the relatives of the victims spoke the first few days after the shooting.
I am glad the families from the victims are finally speaking out.  Even if Holmes is mentally ill, he killed many loved ones. What he did was sick, I couldn’t imagine getting a phone call about one of my loved ones, saying that they were in a shooting at a movie theater and killed.  These victims weren’t doing anything wrong; they were just at the wrong place and at the wrong time.  All of the victims family members should speak up, they have that right.  When things like this shooting happen, I just remind myself that you never know if you will wake up tomorrow.  Make the best out of every situation, every time you see a loved one say I love you.

  1. This blog doesn't really make clear what the issue is, nor does it really tell me how it is a global issue. This is US-centric. Remember that you are supposed to find articles that are international in scope, or at least to link them to global events. Also, keep your analysis objective.
