Two female U.S.
Representatives of Congress, Marsha Blackburn and Carolyn Maloney have recently
addressed the issue of human trafficking with the largest online search engine
in the world, Google Inc. The Representatives sent a bipartisan letter to
Google in questioning and searching deeper into the internal problems at Google
Adwords that “may be allowing international and local human trafficking rings
to sexually exploit and sell women and girls online”. Unfortunately the U.S.
“is one of the biggest consumers of modern slaves and illegal slave labor
worldwide” this also including sex trafficking. The big question Congress is
trying to get Google to address is what percentage of their profits could
possibly be coming from global advertisements linked to human traffickers?
I was glad to
see this article being published; as human trafficking is a major topic that
many Americans tend to believe only occurs in other countries. But in fact,
from the quote above the U.S. is one of human / sexual trafficking’s largest
consumers. Not only from forced labor, but women and young girls are forced or
brought into the lifestyle of sexual slavery across the U.S. and surrounding
countries. The U.S. State Department files thousands of reports each year on
young girls forced into being escorts for men, forced into prostitution, forced
into being sexual objects. I applaud the female Representatives for addressing
Google’s incorporation as this is a very serious issue that people across the
U.S. need to understand happens right here in the heart of America.
