A 42-year-old
man was arrested last week for raping an elderly woman in New York City’s
Central Park, while she was bird watching. Unfortunately David Mitchell has a
history of attacking elderly woman beginning at age eighteen. When he was
eighteen he sexually assaulted and murdered an 86-year-old woman where Mitchell
received a plea deal, went to trial and was soon acquitted. Soon after this
incident Mitchell broke into a 70-year-old woman’s home and sexually assaulted
her. He served eight years for the robbery but the sexual assault charge was
dropped as part of the plea deal. The woman from central park is recovering,
and in good hands.
The nature of
this man is horrific and destroying the life of many innocent women. I became
angered in reading the article, finding myself asking “When is rape / sexual
assault going to be enough for someone to stay put in prison instead of being
released on plea bonds”? Mitchell broke into a woman’s home in his past record
and sexually assaulted her yet he only got put in prison for eight years on the
account of robbery, the sexual assault charge being dropped. I cannot begin to
imagine what the woman whose home was broken into by Mitchell is feeling, with
him still out in society committing continuous sexual assault crimes leading to
the one most recently occurring in Central Park. Although Mitchell has piles of
evidence to put him away for the reoccurring sexual crimes he has committed,
nothing is being done. I am curious to see how the court reacts to his most
recent offense. I hope serious allegations are made and future cases of rape /
sexual assault is taken serious no matter how small the crime committed is.
