Blog 3: Libya Attacks Came in Two Waves, Official Says

Two attacks happened in Benghazi, Libya. It killed four U.S diplomatic personnel, including the ambassador. The first attack was said to be spontaneous and the second one was highly organized and possibly aided by anti-American infiltrators.  The attack killed J. Christopher Stevens, the first United States ambassador killed on duty in more than 30 years. The deaths occurred around a wave of anti-American protest that convulsed the Middle East. It was inspired by an anti-Islamic video named “The Innocence of Muslims.” Protest expanded on Thursday to at least a half dozen other countries, including Iran. Stevens and a second American diplomat, Sean Smith were killed in the initial attack. The attack began as an unorganized but angry demonstration by civilians and militants outside the American Consulate on the Tuesday, the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The protest escalated into an assault with as many as 200 people. Some of them had grenades and set the building on fire. The second attack happened hours later. A team of Libyan security officials was evacuating consulate staff in a convoy guarded by Marines and Libyan security officials who had been flown from Tripoli to retrieve them. The second attack was said to be premeditated because assailants with rocket-propelled grenades apparently knew the route the vehicles were taking. The other two Americans, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen A Doherty, former members of the Navy SEALS, were both killed. Investigators believe there were infiltrators who were feeding them the information. Two Libyan guards said they never even realized the attack was going to happen because it was so quiet before the attack even happened. The Obama Administration has vowed to bring the killers to justice and has sent 50 Marines and two warships to Libya and the FBI has joined the investigation. The worst of the violence started in Yemin. They burned lots of equipment including the American flag. After they burned the American flag they put up their own proclaiming fealty to Islam. The events throughout many countries around Libya and protesters have increased and have only been getting worst. The attacks that happened started with one simple video. The video obviously angered the Islamic nation because the title states “The Innocence of Muslims” but within the movie it states that Muslims killed a lot of Christians. It goes to show that technology and the media have the biggest impact on the world today. Everything is viral. It’s amazing how one video can spark such a huge movement in the world. It is possible that this could be a social problem because it affects the lives of many Muslims and Americans. It is also possible that it could be a global problem because it affected many countries around Libya and I’m sure the U.S. People should be careful of what they out on the internet because it could cause problems not only in their country but around the world.
