Fact
checking a Romney appeal toward women:
The Romney campaign recently submitted an ad “Dear
daughter” featuring “a fictional mother telling her newborn girl about female
unemployment and poverty numbers, as well as the infant’s share of ‘Obama’s
debt’”. The ad does a good job of portraying that Obama’s term has been nothing
but a struggle for women and that the next four years will be even worse if
Obama is elected another term. The article examines how
women have been doing throughout Obama’s term and the facts behind these past
four years. One part of the ad has a statistic regarding poverty; a correct
statistic that the rate of poverty for women has been higher than it’s been in
17 years. Yet the facts behind this census, for one the female poverty rate has
been “rising since the sixth year of the Bush administration”. The poverty rate
for women historically has been higher than of men, so this is nothing new to
the Obama administration. As for the unemployment claim, 5.7 million working
women were unemployed in August before President Obama’s term showing that “women
were worse off than they were before Obama became president”.
I appreciate articles such as this one that breaks down
the truth of campaign advertisements, no matter political affiliation. Too
often administrations are trying to reach a particular group of people, and more
than often leaving out critical facts behind their statements. As a younger
generation female, personally I have noticed positive changes with Obama in
office and I know the negative outcomes that will occur if Romney takes office
the following year. Romney would be getting rid of practically my second home,
Planned Parenthood. I cannot stress the importance Planned Parenthood has in my
life, throughout high school Planned Parenthood provided me with affordable birth control by
being under 18 and affordable STD / STI / HPV testing. Obama continues to
support the work Planned Parenthood does for women, men, children, and families
across the nation. Crossing my fingers to keep Obama in office, as I know
Romney would not benefit women’s rights in the least!
