Blog #4: A Gay Dad Defends His Family

This story all started with a friend posting a story on Facebook about his family.  The friend’s name is Mark, and he is a gay father just like his partner Austin is.  They have adopted 2 children from foster care.  This topic is kind of sensitive because of the many different views on it; well this is why Mark decided to write his story because he was upset about some of the comments being made about how gay parents were the worst parents.  The two kids Mark adopted were from a truly horrific set of personal circumstances that included physical and psychological abuse.  These young kids lived with animal waste and suffered burns, neglect, and trauma.  Mark explains that any parent can be bad, whether they are straight or gay.  He also goes into saying that children do “best” in a home with caring role models, with any gender.  Mark says he brought his kids to preschool, taught them to say “please” and “thank you”, and modeled respect.  The story that Mark gives is about how his two sons, could still be living in abuse but he wanted to be a father and better their lives so that is what he did.

The reason I chose this article for my “family” article is because one of the comments in this was about Romney telling a group of gay parents that “I didn’t know you had families.” This got my attention because everyone has a family, they may not talk to their family but everyone has one or will make a family.  Just because someone chooses another lifestyle than the “norm” doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be able to have a family.  I know people have different views on this subject and I will always respect that. Another, reason this is an important article to me is because my dad is gay. I have never had a problem with it, because I am glad he is who he is and he is one amazing parent.  Family shouldn’t have a definition for who is in it or allowed in it.  This world is diverse so families are very diverse as well.
