Blog #4: U.N. rights chief urges Georgia to probe prison torture

Analysis
The United Nations is investigating a human rights violation, which deals with raping inmates and torturing prisoners.  “Navi Pillay, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights”, she said this about the issue, "We call on the government to ensure that all allegations of such human rights violations, and not only the ones exposed in these videos but any others that have been taking place, are promptly, impartially, and effectively investigated and that perpetrators are brought to justice.” “Pillay’s spokesman Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva”.  In Tbilisi, demonstrators went to the streets after seeing footage on TV on the crimes the guards committed in the main prison in Georgia. “The President Mikheil Saakashvili sought to soothe the protests,” but was unable to reduce tension.  Rupert Colville also said "These videos are truly shocking...They show prisoners being physically and sexually assaulted, being humiliated and being verbally abused by prison officers.”  The United Nations is also trying to get evidence out of President Saakashvili, which he has already said “they will be investigated.”  President Saakashvili also said that he hopes they can find the answers quickly.  He is also allowing unexpected checkups on the prisons status. This includes both “national and international experts,” coming to check the prison is following rules and giving the prisoners there human rights.  For many years the United Nations has had concerns about prisoners being treated wrong in Georgia and has been looking for a way to better regulate the facilities and stop this human rights violation against the prisoners.

Summary
Basically on Friday, Navi Pillay, who is the “U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights,” said that the prisoners in Georgia are being tortured and raped by the prison guards.  This violates a person’s intimate space along with the fact that it was forced on them without any consent.  Not only did they rape the prisoners but they also tortured the prisoners.  Sometimes when we hear these stories they can’t be proved, but in this case most of the crimes were caught on tape.  Pillay also states that the evidence they have is being used to find which guards did this and punish them for their unforgiving crimes.  The videos were also put on a television casting and shown around everywhere.  Tbilisi actually had people go on the streets and protesting the outrage.  The President Mikheil Saakashvili has sought to calm the people down by working with the United Nations in order to find the guards guilty of the crimes and punish them severely.  He is also allowing unannounced prison visits to make sure this doesn’t happen again.  Hopefully the United Nations can help fix this problem that has violated the human rights of the prisoners.
