Millions to promote women in
peacemaking
In
New York, a former U.S. ambassador has announced a multimillion-dollar pledge
as a call for women to be included in decision-making positions “at every level
of peacemaking and peace building” as a support for the United Nations proposed
resolution. This trend has caught on, as a female lecturer at Harvard
University, Swanee Hunt, and her chair will provide 2 million dollars each year
to advance women’s participation in peace related efforts. The new funding will
allow women to work hands on with government officials, legislators, and civic
leaders involving strategic planning and negotiation teams. This effort by the
United Nations will globally give women a voice when it comes to decision-making,
involving war and peace.
This
new effort for women in these strategic planning and decision-making positions
is a wonderful expansion for women in the United Nations. Women continue to
climb the social ladder in regards to occupation, and I am glad to see this new
advancement in the news! There seems to be increasing support towards the ambassador’s
original pledge funding, which hopefully will raise more awareness to the vital
roles that women can fulfill. I was not aware that this was an issue in the
United Nations but glad it was addressed, as women have just as much as a voice
as men do in peacemaking / peace building positions. My hope for America in
specific for the future, is the role of women to be taken seriously and by
seeing grants such as this one, society can take notice of the important work
females contribute to our society daily.
