Obama Tells U.N. New Democracies Need For Speech

On Tuesday President Obama addressed the United Nations to express America’s belief in freedom of speech, especially for Arab and North American democracies. Mr. Obama stated even in the face of violence, freedom of speech is a global freedom. In his address to the General Assembly he said “are not simply American values or Western Values-they are universal values.” He also promised to protect the ability of Americans to say what they think and promised that the United States “will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.” During this 30 minute address he brought up the recent violence over a video that insults Muslims by ridiculing their Prophet Muhammad called "Innocence of Muslims." Despite the death and violence caused by this video Mr. Obama still supports the Arab democracy movement and freedom of speech. Mr. Obama stated a lot of points that the United Nations seemed to be pleased by. Such as “crude and disgusting video” is a right to citizens.“ He also pointed out that as President he accepts that people are going to call him ugly things but he still defends their right as citizens. He said Americans “have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their view.” Although there has been violent and deadly anti-American protest in Benghazi, Libya, Mr. Obama claimed he will not back down from his support of democratic freedoms for Muslims while still bring the killers to justice.  President Obama believes that Arab and North African nations will not have to resort to violent if they have new democracies by having the freedom of speech.

Opinion:
Finally an article that is on the brighter side! In the article it also spoke of Mitt Romney’s responses to this topic which criticizes the President’s support and foreign administration by calling it “an apology for American values.” I completely disagree with Mr. Romney. It is the right of every American citizen to say whatever they wish to and the way he worded that made it sound like he does not support the First Amendment. As much as Americans honor the First Amendment I am somewhat surprised that Mr. Romney would make such a claim. Reading and blogging about the violence and lack of freedom people in the Arab and North African regions have I think this support for new democracies is exactly what these regions need. The people of these regions act in violence because that is the only thing they have to resort to in order to get their human rights noticed. Without freedom of expression people feel like they are trapped against a wall and it is only a matter of time till they lash out and harm someone. What I also have learned from previous articles is that the common reason for why the people act in violence if to fight for their rights against the titration and corruption from their governments. Addressing the American video, it was a terrible decision to make it because of the aftermath that it caused. Whoever made the video did have the complete right to however, with anything one says they should think about the consequences of what he or she says. I hope that the Obama administration gets to continue their support for new foreign democracies and that the Muslim people will one day gain their human right to freedom of speech.
