Last night there was a violent bust out of an Iraqi jail. Militants dressed up in police uniforms attacked the jail and released dozens of jail mates. There was a car explosion outside the jail walls, which lead to gunmen driving police vehicles assaulting the jail guards at the main gate. Among the escaped prisoners were al Qaeda members that had been sentenced to death on more than ten counts. There were about 50 prisoners that escaped while only 20 of them were recaptured as police brought order back to the jail.. Authorities say that it will be nearly impossible to find the remaining escapees because all the files had been burned; documents, photos, identification, everything. This makes the task of finding the escaped felons much harder than it normally would’ve been, which was a task that was already hard enough. Violence in Iraq has slowed down a bit since 06’-07’ when the sectarian slaughtered thousands, but is still common. But Sunni Islamists and an al Qaeda affiliate still launch regular attacks, seeking to destabilize the country and undermine its Shi'ite-led government. Prison breaks are not uncommon either. Prison breaks are not uncommon. Last September, 35 prisoners facing terrorism charges escaped via a sewage pipe from a temporary jail in the city of Mosul, an al Qaeda stronghold. This is a really good explanation and example of why we are still fighting against these terrorizing leagues in the Middle East. I personally am not a strong supporter of the war, but crimes like this one are definitely something that needs to be stopped.
