Lauren Crisp- Aspiring for more as a disabled athlete

My current event for the week is about a woman who had a stroke at age ten, and spent the next few years in a hospital bed, or a wheelchair. She moved from her native home in Brazil, to New York for treatment. Her family urged her to meet up with a guy named Dick Traum, so she could be inspired to get off her feet, and start her life again. Traum started a running club for disabled athletes who want to get their life back together. She went to one meeting in Central Park, and Traum gave her some steps to help her get back on her feet. He told her to walk from one lamppost to another in the park. She had to start out slow, and then make her way up. By the next year, she was able to be in the New York City Marathon. She felt accomplished, and better about herself.

This article really touched me because I am really athletic, and I’m really passionate about getting disabled athletes involved with events. I like getting people to get their self-esteem back up and I like training them to feel better. I feel like people are being helped by this Traum guy, and I am really glad that I saw it. I feel like this is definitely a global problem because there are many different athletes around the world who are having trouble coping. This is a way people can get their lives back together. This is really inspiring to me because I have tried to be a part of this type of event for years, and I have seen people grow and start their lives over.
