Blog 6: Trouble in the Gaza Strip

This week’s article is about the surge of unfair trials and corrupt criminal justice system in the Gaza Strip. Human Rights Watch has reported several cases of arbitrary arrests, torture and unfair trials by the hands of the Palestinian military regime, Hamas that resides in the Gaza Strip. There have been many cases filed by Human Rights Watch to get rid of capital punishment and civilian prosecution in military courts. Hamas claims that their prison facilities are open to a select few human rights organizations based in Palestinian territory. This way there is at least someone looking out for instances of torture and mistreatment. A Hamas representative of the Interior Ministry claims that Hamas has fired around 120 employees in security for abusing prisoners in some way or another. The report detailed by Human Rights Watch has found at least three instances where Palestinians who were suspected of association with Israel were tortured and then executed.

In situations like these, people are deprived of their rights as citizens and human beings and are treated unfairly. Personally I have heard of many cases where a militant group like the Hamas would imprison and even execute innocent civilians. The territorial conflict between Israel and the Palestinian regions has been a controversial subject since it began in the early 20th century. This conflict spans over a wide variety of issues from water rights to the control of Jerusalem. This makes it all the more important to respond. Problems with historical territorial disputes have often led to uncivilized violence. Now, innocent people are being judged unfairly because of hightened tensions  resulted from the conflict. It is important for human rights organizations and activists to monitor instances such as this so that the unjustly actions of the authoritarian group don’t violate human rights laws.
