Blog 6

This week in class our discussion was about crime and how race, ethnicity, and gender affected the likeliness of a crime occurring.  When observing the charts given in the survey provided for us I discovered that females were more likely to be victimized than men.  In the article I found entitled “ San Francisco trails Bay Area in Domestic Violence Prosecutions” , I found another example of a woman who had reported to the police how her ex-boyfriend  had thrown a broken vase at her attempting to kill her while choking her and shaking her. This woman is not the only woman around the United States let alone around the world who has experienced Domestic Violence, which is a very serious matter.  In other countries it is understood that both men and women suffer domestic abuse by their partners or even other close friends, however in other countries there is a stronger intolerance of women than there is in America. In other countries like in the Middle East, families may value having male heirs more so than females so if a female baby is born, then the father may kill the child or exile it. For this particular article the issue is the “no-drop” policy.  The No Drop policy was created to help decrease the amount of domestic violence in societies or rather eliminate the amount of criminals from walking around the streets out in the open by eliminating the option of dropping charges against them in court.  Too often many domestic violence victims let their attackers who are normally close people they already know rather than strangers get away with their crimes by dropping their charges. Domestic Violence is a very serious matter.  No human being should want to live in fear of being hurt by their loved one which is why keeping the no-drop policy and reinforcing it is a very important matter. This should also more than likely decrease crime rates because the main people who have the repeated pattern of abusing others will be incarcerated.  It is very important that we work to decrease the rates of domestic violence around the world especially in other countries where it is actually tolerated for women to be beaten because living in safety is a human right. Domestic Violence is a global problem that affects everyone.  Everyone should be treated with respect by their loved ones and close friends.
