Blog 9 : Locked Up With No Visitation Rights

Fabian Nsue Nguma who is a very prominent lawyer was detained by authorities in Black Beach prison in Malabo which is the capital of Equatorial Guinea. On October 22, Nsue was attempting to visit a client when he was detained and was refused of all visitation rights. His family searched for over 24 hours on his whereabouts and officials refused to provide any. Nsue's wife tried visiting the prison on the 23rd but was turned away without any confirmation of his whereabouts. However, another family was able to enter the prison that same day and saw Nsue there. When Nsue's wife tried to see her husband she was turned away twice but prison authorities privately confirmed to her that her husband was being held there. His wife also told Human Rights Watch that she was threatened by a prison official when she tried visiting him on the 24th of October, he told her that if she continued to insist on seeing her husband that she would end up behind bars just like him. It appeared that Equatorial Guinea authorities were holding Nsue without charges as well as denying his right to visitors.

Being that Nsue was arrested without a warrant and denied his right to have visitors his human rights were clearly taken away from him. Due to his detention being secret as well as incommunicado it violates domestic and international law. And to make matters worse Nsue was not the only person that this was done to. It was said that this situation raises serious concern about the government's pledged commitment to human rights and judicial reforms. This is the government promising its citizens one thing and doing the complete opposite and that is in no way fair or just.
