Rebels Revolt in Assam Clashes

Violence revolts have broken out in the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts area this week. Supposedly it was organized violence by organized groups to spread violence between two clashing ethnic groups. This time was different from last revolts because this violent clash was meant and organized to encourage widespread violence between the two ethnic groups.
Six people have been killed in the past week and 90 people have been killed in the revolts of the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts. There have been group clashes this past summer but what differs between this revolt and past revolts is because this was spontaneous and out of nowhere. It was isolated. Police said regulation of weapons will be even more strict.

Brawl in Kabul; Blog #3

A deadly gun battle broke out in Kabul September 9, 2012 between rival ethnic groups during a traffic jam. It was between the Tajiks and Hazaras more specifically who have a history of rivalry dating back to the civil war in Kabul. The fight broke out during a holiday celebration that honors the life of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Tajik commander who was assassinated by Al Qaeda bombers. Hazaras have tension against Massoud because of a violent brawl his forces afflicted on them in the early 1990s.

Eyewitnesses said that the gun fight broke out when pack of Panjshiri cars hit a bicyclist in a Hazara neighborhood. Massoud’s people marched through the neighborhood with poster revering him and the Hazaras took that as an offensive act.  Believe it or not, racial violence is uncommon in Kabul seeing as the Hazaras and Tajiks both face the same enemy—the Taliban.  The Taliban is mostly made up of Pashtuns.

Witnesses also said that police were called to the scene and opened fire on the fighting crowd. The number of those killed hasn’t been determined yet. When Afghan officials are asked about the incident they either ignore the call from new sources or downplay the extremity of the violence.  One thing also the witnesses noted that the Afghan police and the rebels. People began to burn police outposts and six victims were taken into the hospital for gunshot wounds.

Blog #2

Even though ethnic violence has decreased in the United States in these past decades, other countries are still suffering from ethnic division. In last week’s blog I talked about the violent brawl that broke out in South Jakarta between two ethnic groups fighting over land—a superficial matter. The violence and prejudice doesn’t stop at Jakarta but has made its way to Africa.

Today, September 7th, two ethnic groups, more specifically the Orma and Pokomo tribe, brawled near Tana River in Kenya, Africa. Eyewitnesses said the riot was a result of clashing over food. Village houses were burned down and 11 were killed. The rest involved in the brawl were wounded according to the Red Cross. Apparently Orma and Pokomo have a history of disputes dating back to ancient times. In August this year, a very violent massacre broke out between these two opposing tribes. Fifty-two people were killed. Over 200 people have been killed due to violence between the Orma and Pokomo tribe since the beginning of this year.

It’s shocking to hear about such violence still happening in other countries around the world. It was pretty ignorant of me to think that just because America has mostly gotten over racism that the rest of the world has as well. Hopefully, one day the global community can all coexist without violence; and when they have disputes, it can be settled through discussion instead of violence.

Two Ethnic Groups Brawl in Jakarta

Even though we, as a global community, have been progressing from clashing against others who are of different cultures from us, we regress back into ethnic division. On August 29, 2012, two ethnic groups in Jakarta were caught in a street riot that held traffic up and left pedestrians scared, taking for cover. According to eye-witnesses, the fight broke out over an empty land plot next to Palem Lestari Real Estate around 2 p.m. The two groups were also armed with weapons such as samurai swords, daggers, blunts, stones, and other sharp, lethal objects. Passerbys avoided the area altogether during the fight. Over a hundred cops were called to the scene from West Jakarta and CengKareng Sector Police to break the fight up. The cause of these two gangs' brawl hasn't been disclosed yet.

Another current event relating to ethnic division is the internal racism spreading through Australia's FECCA also known as Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia. The chairman of FECCA, Pino Miglioriono, spoke out on August 30th about the prejudice going through federation. Miglioriono reported at a conference that many workers have reported being victims of discrimination. He said that clients have felt judged by their real estate agent for how they dress, how many children they have, and their accents. Miglioriono is putting a stop to this by starting the campaign "Racism. It Stops With Me."
