The Government in Brazil has implemented the “Law of
Social Quotas” which said that all public universities must now reserve 1/2 of
their admission to poor African American students. The affirmative action law was
already in place but they added this stipulation to it because the majority of
the students that attend the universities in Brazil are white, rich students. The
government wants to give the poor, African American students a more equal
chance to attend a university because they don’t normally get that opportunity.
The government also wants to reduce the inequality based on race and income in
terms of giving everyone an equal chance to go to school. Brazil also wants to desegregate
or equal out the workplace in Brazil because there are very few African
American professionals. Many of the white students aren’t happy about this
change and education experts seem to think that many of these students are
going to transfer to a private university where the affirmation action policy isn’t
as strict. The senators feel good about this new law because they feel like it
is a good change from the normal unjust society in Brazil. They feel like
because they are making a change in education that it will spill over into
other areas in Brazil like the workplace, as well as, culture.
