Blog#9:A taste of foreign lands

This article is about local families who have participated in AFS Intercultural Programs in recent years.  Many of these families say the experience of having an exchange student is for those who are looking for a deep, rewarding cultural experience, than to look no further.  Jeni Greenshield’s from the article says, “I do it all the time, our kids love it and we have a hard time saying goodbye.” She is one out of a few people that have positive things to say about exchange students in this article.  Also Koreen Sander’s says “It’s also a great experience for our own kids. For them, it’s like having an older sister or brother.” They end this article by saying that many exchange students stay in touch with their host families after they return home. Some families even go visit their former exchange student.
I would say this ties in with my topic of family because it is about the different cultures that every family has.  The exchange students are coming to a foreign country with their own culture, while also learning about the family they are staying with.  Family is all about the culture and the relationships we learn.  Everyone’s family has different views and morals which is what exchange students and the families see. Just because someone’s family isn’t like yours, doesn’t mean it wrong.  Your family is what you make of it.  I also think culture is a big part of a family for where they are from and how they were raised.  Having an exchange student come to your house for a few months is a learning experience for all of you, even the exchange student. I understand that many views on family are that they are only your blood relatives and I would agree somewhat but I also think it has to do with the relationships you make as well.
