Blog 1: Chicago Homicide Rate Surges

My problem area being crime, my entry today will be on Crime in Chicago. Chacago has been having an outstanding number of homicides lately. With four more months left in the year 2012, there has already been a surge in Chicago's homicide rate by thirty-one percent. A local hospital, equipped to provide comprehensive emergency medical services to patients suffering traumatic injuries, has been load with people coming in because of the city's surge of violent crimes. That particular night, it all started at 12:30am with a victim coming it with thirteen wholes in his body from gun shots. Once he came in, not long after, came the chaos. Other victims started flowing in. There were seven other gun shot victims and two stabbed victims, along with other emergency calls. There are five level one truama units in Chicago and its a shame that because of the violence increment three out of five of the trauma units are crouded.
As this news reports, the crime in Chicago is increasing. Personaly the crime in Chicago, i think, is outrageous. Statistics like this, in my opinion, is what makes crime overall a social problem. In the same token, I would like to use my sociological imagination and think about what may be causing the rise in the violence. Maybe the crime rate is increasing in Chicago because maybe the emotional support in homes are decreasing. The first guy entering the hospital that night said that he was shot while walking down the street. The person that shot him could have been shooting only for gang initiation. That particular person might have been trying to be apart of a gang because the people in that gang may show him love, the only type of love he may recieve. Its a possibily that he is looking for some type of family that loves and support him, and in his eyes the gang could be the only thing he has to turn to.

  1. You did a good job with your summary. You even brought in some of the class vocabulary, which is good. You analyzed why this is a social problem, which was also good. However, you didn't pick an article that was international in origin. This is a US-centric article. You did not talk about why it is a global social problem, nor could you because this is domestic story. Also, try to be more objective when you are analyzing the story.
