China Forces Ethnic Kachin Refugees Back to a Conflict Zone in Myanmar’s North
This article is about the recent conflict between Chinese authorities and Kachin refugees. In June 2011, Kachin people fled to southeastern China. The civil war between the Burmese military and the Kachin Independence Army is the reason the Kachin's fled. The problem that is occurring now is the Kachin refugees are being forced from their settlements in China, and pushed back into the conflict zones of Myanmar. Thousands of people are being forced to move at an alarming speed. The Kachin’s housing are being torn down as they are being forced from the land. The Kachin refugees first fled a civil war in Myanmar and made their way to China. The conflict zone that the refugees fled from is Kachin State in Mayanmar. The Chinese authorities are forcing the refuges in huge masses of people. The movement started on Tuesday of this week and already 1,000 people have been forced back to the Kachin State. Refugees are returning to Myanmar in such a rush that " '..an additional 4,000 were projected to return by the end of the week.' " quote from an unnamed researcher for Human Rights Watch. The continual conflict and war has established uncertain feelings about the president of Myanmar, formerly Burma, Thein Sein. His people are doubting his abilities to provide peace for their country. The reason for the refugees being forced out of China is unclear. Some Chinese religious and aid groups have been helping the Kachin’s. It is also uncertain the view point of China on this issue of the refugees being forced into the conflict zone.
I was immediately interested in this article as I began reading. I was surprised there was no exact public issue that was the reason for the refugees being forced out. I really want to know the exact reason for the Chinese authorities to push the Kachin refugees back to Myanmar. These people are being forced into a conflict zone and from where they have lived for years. My opinion on this article is that the Chinese authorities are wrong for pushing the Kachin people into Myanmar. The treatment and conditions of the refugees are also a factor of why I disagree with the Chinese authorities.
