Blog #1 Regina Da Silva

From Saturday, an unreasonable and unfair new law will come into the lives of England and Wales inhabitants. In This country is due to experience a horrible disaster. Just about 50,000 squatters (A person who unlawfully occupies an uninhabited building or unused land) who are currently squatting in empty building in the UK will begin being charges as criminals. Although the buildings are not in use the government is against them having a roof over the heads of their children and family.
With this new law coming into act, thousands of less fortunate people will suddenly become criminals; Having to pay up to six months in jail and fines of up to 5,000 Euros. In reference to this Guardian Article, “With homelessness rates rising and the number of empty properties currently in the region of more than 930,000 according to the Empty Homes Agency”. This law will protect nor benefit anyone but crooked landlords who are keeping properties empty for their own benefits. These buildings are just sitting there empty, while fathers are relocating and are jumping from shelters to shelters with babies, young children, and wives who are suffering. Yet both the government and these landlords are only corrupt.
Although I do understand that private property right do exist, I still fail to understand how someone with so much to offer others, can just sit back with their hands tied. I may just believe this due to my religion, but I also believe that everyone should have some type of compassionate bone in their body, to know that good things come back to those who give. How can you live in this world and have all the resources needed to help others, yet do absolutely nothing about it? How can you have a father go to jail for trying to provide for his family? How can you have a closed property which is empty, knowing there are homeless people all over this world? How is this world going to get better, if there are cruel and unjust laws like this being passed?
