“Alps shooting”
Summary:
While staying at a campsite in Saint-Jorioz from the end of August with their two daughters, a set of parents, a grandmother, and an innocent motorcyclist were killed during the first week of September when a murder incident occurred close to Lake Annecy in which 3 of the 4 victims were shot in the head. A four-year old girl by the name of Zeena al-Hilli was found alive in the back seat of the car eight hours later when the forensics squad appeared on the crime scene, surrounded by three dead bodies. Another young girl by the name of Zainab, is believed to be the sister of Zeena remains in critical condition after her body was found lying on the road. The eldest girl was shot in the shoulder, had been beaten severely into a coma, and now suffers from a fractured skull. In addition to the family of five, a married motorcyclist with children by the name of Sylvian Mollier, aged 45, was also found dead after simply passing by the crime scene on his way back home.  Neither the gunman nor the weapon has been found by the police. Police can reveal no motives for the massacre, as only the windows of the BMW car were targeted. The two girls are the only witnesses that are able to describe the gruesome attack, in hopes of bringing justice to their parents, grandmother, and the motorcyclist who was a bystander.

Analysis:
Though this media story is based in France, several countries globally can relate to losing local citizens by horrid murders. Though the authorities haven’t yet caught the assassinator, he corrupt deeds will not go unnoticed and he surely will suffer for bringing such harm and anguish upon the two young girls and the residents in the town. An anonymous Belfast resident once stated that “it’s not the bullet with my name on it that worries me; it’s the once that says To Whom It May Concern.” When people are purposefully killed by others, the well-being and trust of humans are damaged both physically and psychologically. Stories such as these affect the global society as a whole because innocent, precious lives are stolen unexpectedly, and under such horrific circumstances that demonstrate how terrible human’s morals have fallen. The fact that an individual could shoot a gun at a family’s car while they are on vacation depicts how corruption remains relevant in the universe. Specifically, the fact that a person can consciously beat a four year old and her seven year old sister into a coma and causing them to suffer from posttraumatic stress and a fractured skull is extremely unbelievable. Crime stories such as these cause citizens as a whole to become terrified of participating in certain events. Crime also affects our global society because it increases national spending by hiring more police officers and neighborhood watchers to ensure that all persons feel somewhat safe and secure in their homeland.

  1. This really made me wonder what went through the mind of the shooter. In the 1999 Amadou Diallo shooting in New York, police officers shot Diallo(a Guinean immigrant) automatically after he withdrew something from his pocket when they saw him sitting outside his residence at night. They assumed it was a gun and opened fire, even though it turned out to be his wallet. It's sad how people can commit such serious acts so quickly, when the acts can have detrimental effects that are definitely worth time spent in prior consideration.
