Blog#10:Valuing Families in the 21st Century: Solving the Work-Family Crisis

For many countries, when it comes to valuing the work of families, ensuring fair and flexible workplaces, and investing in the care of children and their future, the policies fall pitifully short.  178 countries guarantee some leave with pay to women in connection with childbirth.  And seventy-four ensure paid paternity leave or the right to paid parental leave for fathers. The US, is one of the only countries on earth to not guarantee paid maternity leave.  Also for the US, where parental leave, sick time, child care arrangements, and flexible work schedules have been left to the employers and employees to work out individually.  Many may be surprised but the Jewish community is just as bad as the US almost, for the emphasis on family and caregiving.  Parental and family leave, sick days, flexible work arrangements, and combating caregiver discrimination are getting better little by little at least.
Now with this said, I didn’t know that many countries were having the same problems as we have here in the US.  Hopefully, these improvements will keep improving for every country. I think this issue is a big problem because to me family is a big deal.  Having a baby is such a blessing, the mother and father should get some paid time to bond with their new child.  Also, if someone in the family isn’t doing well, I feel that it is important to let family help during the rough time.  As I think the same thing with a child being sick, parents should be able to have some time off to help their child get better. You can’t send a sick child to school to get even more kids sick. I understand that the amount of sick days may be limited to not allow people to fake the sick card, but then if they really have a sick child it should be paid time off for a limited time.  I understand that everyone who has a job has a responsibility to go to their job and work.  However, if there are family issues I think that should come first as long as it isn’t a while and they work it out with their job.
